The next big thing in PC storage (PCIe-based SSD)

Interesting to have 375gb as addressable memory for only $1500.

I can see why people are excited about this. I would expect in 5 or so years for AWS et. al. to be offering cheaper VM provisions with Optane for customers who don’t mind the small performance hit.


It’s my understanding that Optane’s capabilities exceed the available bandwidth of any bus it’s connected to. In other words, the bus is the bottleneck for Optane’s performance right now. It will be interesting to see what Intel comes up with to get around this problem. I’m not aware of any emerging bus standards which will allow for Optane to be completely maxed out in performance aside from the main memory controller. Since it’s slower than main memory… that seems like it would be a poor trade-off.
