Linksys RE1000 Wireless-N Extender Review

Cisco sent me a RE1000 Wireless-N Extender, thanks!

The problem (that I believe the majority are facing) is not setting up the RE1000, it’s the RE1000 dropping other devices from the internet after couple of minutes. This can easily be fixed if you change the ip from DHCP to static.

A side note:

RE1000 also doesn’t support mac address filter option enabled on your home router that the RE1000 is extending.

Packaging was nice (doesn’t really matter though), had a beautiful design, and very easy set up. Not to mention it’s a great deal for $79.99!

I turned on my laptop, put in the cd which it comes with, followed the steps and within 3 minutes was up and going went from 3 bars to 5 full bars excellent reception. It’s really easy to do, just have a computer, wireless router, and range extender plugged into an outlet between you and the wireless router, and it will automaticaly find your router.

I would say that this is perfect for the average non-geek who just needs something to work out of the box as expected based upon what you read about it.

Keep in mind that this is not a signal booster but a range extender to place between your wireless router and a dead zone.

A range extender increases the distance over which a WLAN signal can spread, overcoming obstacles and enhancing overall network signal quality. Several different forms of wireless range extenders are available. These products are sometimes called “range expanders” or “signal boosters.”

The Wireless-N Range/Extender Bridge (RE1000) is able to sustain wireless signal at 150 feet away from the router. It can also function as wireless bridge.

Package Contents:

  • Linksys RE1000 Wireless-N Range Extender
  • CD-ROM with Setup Software and Resources
  • AC Power Cord for table or desktop placement
  • AC Power Connector Cover
  • Ethernet Cable

 My Thoughts:

The product is good in terms of extending range, but ultimately it is does not extend the optimal performance from your router. You can’t simply move it around the house without going back to the install disc, and it signal becomes easily interrupted by say, garage door openers. I have seen little improvement for online play with my PS3 from this product, even when using the Ethernet plugin. For the top-of-the-line product of this sort, I was expecting more.

  1. upgrading to a much more powerful router is a better option than purchasing a range extender, this is based on my own experience. a weak router will only send weaker signal across the range extender, get a router with 6 antennas.

  3. Over the years I have used many networking products, wired or wireless, be it Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Aztech. Among all these brands, I trusted Linksys the most. It’s the most reliable out of all the brands I have tried, not until today. Because no matter how bad the networking products are, they never push me to the stage to smash it into pieces, and Linksys RE1000 is the only one. It is the biggest fraud Linksys ever created. One day it’s working without any problem, the next day it keep disconnecting or can’t connect at all. One hour it’s working fine, the next minute it’s disconnecting for more than 10 times (I lost count). The catch is, the settings are the same! Don’t waste your money, time on this so called wireless expander/repeater. It’s pointless, hopeless, useless. Read CISCO forum and you will find just how many users can’t ever get it to work. Bear in mind I am using a Linksys router, so there shouldn’t be any compatible issue.
