Final Fantasy to be remade for PS3 and Vita
According to gbase Final Fantasy X HD is still early in development and is unknown if Yoshinori Kitase is directly involved.
Final Fantasy X will be a full remake of the game using Final Fantasy XIII’s Crystal Tools Engine.
Some things that they will change in the remake from scratch is:
- The characters
- Cut Scenes
- and will have Online Options
I’m very happy with this announcement. Final Fantasy X is one of my all-time favorite games, and given what Square has been doing with the series over the last decade (MMORPGs, ill-advised sequels, and endlessly delayed games in the series proper that turn out to be disappointments), I’d be fine with them just putting out HD remakes of their great games instead. I agree that X is the most logical choice for an HD remake because it would be much easier than anything that predated it. Those games would be to be entirely rebuilt on a new engine, which would be costly and time-consuming. I’m not sure I agree that they could just make Final Fantasy XV in the same time and for the same cost because they wouldn’t have to rewrite the story, but it certainly would be formidable. If I had confidence that XV would be anywhere close to as good as any of the games from VI through X, then I would prefer an entirely new game. But I don’t have that confidence.
Actually, I’m wondering if this remake of X isn’t both a way to get more money out of fans of the series (this is one I’d gladly pay for, as at least I know I’m getting a great game with a great story, much more than I can say about XII or XIII) and also to test the market for sequels to their other games. If this one makes a fortune, that would indicate that the demand for a Final Fantasy VI or VII sequel would be very strong, so it might be worth the time and money to make HD remakes of those games instead of putting out another mediocre addition to the series that tarnishes its legacy. I think Square cares a lot more about making money than anything else, so I’m hoping that it will sell well enough that it would make sense financially to start remaking other games. In particular, a Final Fantasy VI remake is at the top of my wish list.
